Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken’s Division of Cultural Affairs today announced the 7th & Jackson Community Mural Project, which will pay tribute to Hoboken’s west side residents, community, neighborhood, and history. The mural design will be created in collaboration with local students attending the Division’s Mural Arts Workshops this summer, and painted by artists from local business Mural Painter Inc. The design, which will be painted along the 2,025-square-foot eastern fence at the 7th & Jackson Resiliency Park, will feature images from photo submissions by west side residents, as well as those drawn from the public record and oral histories.
“The 7th & Jackson Community Mural Project is a celebration of the stories, people, and spirit of Hoboken’s vibrant west side,” said Mayor Bhalla. “By engaging our youth and honoring our shared history through public art, we are beautifying our open space, but even more importantly, we’re strengthening our sense of community. I encourage residents to share their memories and be part of this meaningful tribute.”
Hoboken residents can submit photos from family gatherings, sporting events, graduations, celebrations, and other significant moments that illustrate the daily life of Hoboken’s west side community, both past and present, at https://hoboken.seamlessdocs.com/f/7thJacksonMural.
The deadline to submit photos is Friday, July 11, at 5 p.m.
Youth between the ages of 8 and 14 can still register online to participate in the Mural Arts Workshops by CLICKING HERE. Classes will be held at the Damon Murray Community Gym at 605 Jackson St. during the following dates and times:
Students are encouraged to attend as many workshops as they would like. The program is free for children who qualify for free or reduced lunch
The mural will be painted throughout July and August, weather permitting. This project is recommended by the City’s Arts Advisory Committee, approved by the Hoboken City Council and Administration, and funded by the City’s Public Arts Trust Fund, established by Mayor Bhalla’s 2018 executive order.
Youth can still register for additional summer art programs offered by the Division of Cultural Affairs, including salsa, hip-hop, dance, spoken word, theater, photography, drawing, acting, fashion, sculpture, and more.
