Hoboken celebrates newly renovated Elysian Park dog run

Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla, Hudson County Commissioner Anthony Romano and Friends of Elysian Park celebrated the grand re-opening of the newly renovated Elysian Park Dog Run this weekend. The dog run was renovated with modern K9 turf and an upgraded drainage system, with funding provided by Hudson County’s Open Space Trust Fund.

“We are committed to making real quality of life improvements in our parks that will last for years to come, and our dog parks are no exception,”said Mayor Bhalla. “The new turf has been a common request from dog owners, and thanks to our partnership with Hudson County we were able to make this a reality. I extend my sincere thanks to the dedicated members of Friends of Elysian Park, Director Jen Gonzalez, and the City Council for helping facilitate these improvements.”

“The renovated Elysian Dog Park is the latest example of the City of Hoboken and Hudson County working with the community to provide quality of life improvements through the County’s Open Space Trust Fund,” said Commissioner Romano. “I know the new dog park will be well utilized and enjoyed by our furry friends!”

“Our historic Elysian Park’s shaded walks and lively playgrounds have been a place where, for more than a century, adults and kids have gathered to enjoy a summer day,”said Margaret Mallan, Committee Chair of Friends of Elysian Park. “The Friends of Elysian Park are so grateful to the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund, City of Hoboken, Mayor Bhalla, and Director Jen Gonzalez for helping to ensure that our four legged friends can also enjoy this beautiful urban oasis for years to come. We’re very excited about the new turf, as well as the long range plan for the park drainage that was included in the foundation.”

The dog park renovations including the excavation of the previous stone surface, the installation of efficient drainage and synthetic K9 turf with Envirofill, and will include the masonry rehabilitation of the fountain.

The City of Hoboken, in partnership with Hudson County, recently upgraded the Stevens Park and Church Square Park dog runs to the K9 turf surface. Hoboken also added a brand new dog run at 2nd and Hudson Streets in 2019, and partnered with the Maxwell Park Board to renovate the dog run at Maxwell Park.
