Clear sidewalks & curb ramps; Do not shovel snow into streets; Inspectors out

Hoboken public works crews and contractors, as well as Hudson County and the Hoboken Business Alliance, continue to clear snow and ice from public roads, sidewalks, and City properties. Residents and property owners are reminded to remove snow and ice from sidewalks on, and adjacent to, their property, along with adjoining curb ramps or curb cuts. Please remember, it is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants. Those who don’t keep sidewalks clear may be issued fines.

City inspectors are currently conducting sidewalk inspections throughout Hoboken. If you see unshoveled or untreated property, please report it by emailing sanitationinspectors@hobokennj.gov.

It is illegal to drive with accumulated snow or ice on any part of your vehicle in the State of New Jersey. If you must drive today, please make sure to clear your entire car of snow and ice before getting on the road, to prevent snow and/or ice from flying off and causing safety hazards for yourself and others.

Please see below for important health and safety tips when removing snow.

Emergency Snow Routes in effect; do not park on snow emergency routes

Snow emergency routes are still being enforced, and vehicles parked in snow emergency routes are subject to towing. This is necessary to allow public works crews to continue clearing snow and ice on public property, for emergency vehicles to move throughout Hoboken, and for the safety and welfare of all residents. Please do not park on snow emergency routes until the restrictions are lifted.

Emergency snow routes in Hoboken are labeled with street signs that read “No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered.” A map of emergency snow routes is available on the City’s website www.hobokennj.gov/snow and are listed below:

  • Fourth Street – South Side – River St. to Jackson St.
  • Willow Avenue West Side – Observer Hwy. to 11th St.  (County Road)
  • Third Street – North Side – Jackson St. to River St.
  • Ninth Street – North Side – Jackson St. to Castle Point Ter.
  • Fifth Street- South Side – Clinton St. to River St.
  • Washington Street (Both Sides)
  • Observer Highway – (Both Sides) Henderson St. to Hudson St. (County Road)
  • 13th Street – North Side – Washington St. to Madison St.
  • 13th Street – South Side – Washington St. to Hudson St.

Snow emergency routes will be lifted by the Office of Emergency Management when streets are plowed sufficiently, and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the flow of traffic for emergency operations.

Temporary No-Parking signs remain in effect on the east side of Grand Street between Third and Eighth Streets.  If snow is not cleared, it can prevent vehicles from parking within the parking lane, causing them to encroach into the travel lane and block the flow of traffic, including emergency vehicles. Only when signs are removed, will parking be allowed.

Waste and recycling collection resumes tonight

Please place garbage in a container with a tight-fitting lid, next to comingled recyclables, at the curb after 7:30 p.m. in residential areas, or after 9 p.m. in the Limited Business Area. The City’s contract hauler will collect both waste and recycling tonight, separately.

Waste in public trash cans will be collected throughout the day today. The City appreciates residents’ patience with waste collection, as public works crews prioritize snow removal operations.

Other suspensions, cancellations & closures

New Jersey Transit has resumed service on the 126 bus route, limited service on train lines, and service on the Light Rail system. For more information, please head to https://www.njtransit.com/

Municipal offices in City Hall and the Multi-Service Center are closed today, as are Hoboken public schools, and the Hoboken Public Library.

All recreation and senior programming is cancelled today.

Hop service, street cleaning, and metered parking are all suspended today. Street cleaning is suspended tomorrow, as well.

The City will continue to enforce safety-related parking regulations, including illegal parking, blocking crosswalks, and double parking. Loading zone regulations will also be enforced to ensure businesses and residents can continue to receive deliveries.

Garage parking discount extended

The City’s Department of Transportation and Parking has extended the parking discount until Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m.

Anyone parked in Municipal Garage B, Garage D, or the Midtown Garage, which are at capacity, at the discounted $5 rate per 24-hour period, should remove their vehicle by 4 p.m., Tuesday. Those who do not will be charged the regular hourly rate for any time in the garage before 4 p.m. Saturday and after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

To avoid delays exiting the garages, please plan to exit early, as lines can form when the discounted rate ends.

Use caution in icy conditions and extreme cold

The City’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) continues to urge residents to stay off the roads and avoid travel if possible. If walking, do so on sidewalks and stay out of the street. Roadways and walkways will remain icy and slippery. Please use extreme caution, and dress appropriately, if you must be outside, as temperatures will remain below freezing.

Shoveling safety tips

Hoboken EMS/HVAC and the Hoboken Health Division recommend the following tips to shovel safely:

  • Wear layers
  • Take it slow and take breaks inside to warm up, as needed
  • Push the snow rather than lift it or lift with legs, not your back
  • If you do lift it, lift with your legs, not your back
  • Stay hydrated
  • Know the signs of a heart attack, including chest pains or shortness of breath, and stop immediately to call 911
  • Bring your phone with you, in case of a medical emergency
  • Ask for assistance, if needed
