City of Hoboken seeks public input on the future of Church Square Park

Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken today launched an online public survey to collect community feedback on two draft concept designs for the Church Square Park Vision Plan. The plan will guide the City when it seeks to make improvements to the nearly 150-year-old park to serve the Hoboken community for the next 150 years, while maintaining its historic character. The project team will use survey responses, along with feedback from community meetings, to create a final concept design.

“Church Square Park has been serving the Hoboken community for generations, and it has evolved and adapted as needed, but now we must decide what comes next for this historic gem,” said Mayor Bhalla. “I encourage all residents to take part in that process and make their voices heard, by filling out this survey.”

The first concept, The Oval, proposes shifting active uses to the perimeter of the park and re-establishes the historic oval as a passive space for strolling, sitting, and community gathering. This vision includes a strolling path around the oval, natural themed playgrounds, a spray plaza, and multiple seating areas including a garden plaza. The Oval also includes enhancements to the basketball courts, an expanded flexible turf area with play mounds, and renovated lawn spaces.

The second concept, The Central Spine, proposes dividing active and passive uses along the historic spine with passive uses on the west side and active uses on the east side of the park. This vision includes a defined central spine with plantings and seating, a new splash pad, a picnic grove with outdoor games, upgraded playgrounds, a linear plaza, expanded flexible turf area with social swing seating, and renovated lawn spaces.

The final concepts will be gradually implemented in the coming years as repairs and upgrades are planned or needed for the park.
