Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken today announced the opening of the new children's playground at Church Square Park designed for youth five years old and younger. The new inclusive play area will provide Hoboken’s youngest residents with a modern and safe space in one of the City’s most historic parks.
The playground, located in the southwest section of the park, along Fourth Street between Park Avenue and Willow Avenue, features inclusive and educational play elements designed to engage young children, including ramped play structures, play mounds, magnet play elements, all-user swings, curved benches, and modern safety surfacing.
The project was made possible in part through funding from the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund, following years of planning and community engagement to update the park.
“Seeing our youngest kids already enjoying the new playground at Church Square Park is a reminder of why we invest in public spaces that help bring our community together,” said Mayor Bhalla. “I extend my gratitude to our County partners for their support, and to the residents whose input helped design these much-needed upgrades, which will no doubt bring joy to families for years to come.”
"I am excited to see residents and their families rediscover play at the newly repaired toddler play area in Church Square Park! I am proud to have recommended this project to receive Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund support to revitalize this community space that is beloved by the community," said Hudson County Executive Craig Guy. "I am thankful to the Board of County Commissioners including Chairman Romano for voting to approve this project and I look forward to continuing to support the recreation and safety of Hudson County residents through our Open Space Trust Fund."
"I am happy to see the toddler playground area in Church Square Park restored and open to residents and their families. This is a valued space that has been in need of renovation and state of the art equipment upgrades to ensure safe play and for sports," said Anthony L. Romano, Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. "The Open Space Trust Fund continues to make recreation safer and more available in our County, thanks to County Executive Guy's steadfast commitment and leadership. Church Square Park is important to the residents of Hoboken and I'm excited to see residents utilizing the space for different opportunities."
The new children’s playground for Hoboken’s youngest residents is a big step forward in Phase 1 of the Church Square Park Improvements Project, which also includes a new lawn area where the old ages two to five playground was, a landscape buffer along the dog run to help reduce noise, and new public restrooms. These upgrades, expected to be complete this fall, reflect the Church Square Park Vision Plan, developed through an extensive public planning process which included meetings and surveys.
