Our names are Kyla Harvie, Penny Preston, and Chloe Rousseau. We were interested in this subject because the theme was very intriguing. We go to All Saints Episcopal Day School, which happens to be one of the box locations. We are requesting this location because our design was heavily influenced by what we are taught at All Saints.
Our design represents the shared love between all cultures. There is no knowing of which hand is sharing the heart and which is receiving the love. That is what represents equity. On the sides, it shows all the hands rising up to help each other.
A mantra that all kids at our school live by is “Mitakuye Oyasin, we are all related.” Mitakuye Oyasin is a Lakota saying meaning “we are all related.” This quote fits the theme of equity and inclusion because being related means we are family. In a family, everyone is their own person with their own journey that intertwines with that with whom they are related to. In a family, you can respect each other’s individuality while still acknowledging that you are equals. We think the community could benefit from this quote and use it as a reminder of treating people how they need to be treated as opposed to how you wish to be treated.
