I am a longtime Hoboken resident and fine artist who paints cloud murals on interior/exterior spaces, as well as portraits and surrealistic compositions for private commissions.
I chose a portrait of John Lennon and a quote from his song “Imagine” for my mural since it is the 50th Anniversary of the album of the same name. This song has deep and beautiful meaning as it encompasses the themes of equity and inclusion. Although not specific to Hoboken, I feel this message is a broad and relevant one and therefore is relatable to residents and visitors alike.
John’s colorful illustrative hair symbolizes the universality of all people. The rose symbolizes universal love. The word “Imagine” refers to the ideal of a “brotherhood of man”. The sky represents humanity devoid of racial division. The clouds symbolize each person’s unique individuality because there are no two clouds alike.
The quote in the clouds—“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one” —is taken from John’s transcendently inspiring song. Fun fact: the typeface for the quote is called “John Lennon” and was based on his own handwriting.
I’m happy to be a part of this uplifting project for our city.
