Municipal Parking Garage Improvements

The Hoboken Parking Utility (HPU) is installing new, state-of-the-art parking technology in the municipal garages. These improvements include a new parking access system as well as a parking guidance system. The system’s improved technology will streamline the parking and payment experience for users with the following key improvements:

  • License plate recognition cameras. As each vehicle enters a garage, a license plate recognition camera will scan each vehicle's license plate, granting access to monthly permit parkers and registering entrance times for hourly parkers. Monthly parkers may add multiple license plates per account but only one vehicle per account will be allowed inside of the garage at a time. If a permit holder changes their license plate they will be required to update the license plate number in their online account or contact the garage office at 201-653-7333.
  • New online account portal for Monthly and "HHELPR" accounts. Monthly parking customers can conveniently make monthly payments by credit or debit card, setup autopay, update account information, and more with a new online account portal. Customers will need to re-verify their contact and license plate information prior to the install dates for each garage. Automatic payments in the new system will begin on September 1st for Garage G & D parkets and on October 1st for Midtown and Garage B parkers. A convenience fee of $3.00 will be added to credit card and debit card payments made through the online portal. Instructions and details from HPU regarding verification and online account setup are provided below.
  • Parking guidance system. The new RedStorm Parking Guidance System will notify drivers of real-time parking spot availability through a digital sign displayed at the entrance of each garage. Parking availability information will also be accessible through the City's website.
  • E-Validation system. A new online-based merchant validation system will streamline the ability for merchants to purchase, activate, and track discount parking validations for their customers.
  • Compatibility with popular parking reservations platforms. The new parking access system will be compatible with popular parking reservation services, such as ParkWhiz and Spot Hero, which will allow customers to reserve a parking space in a municipal garage before ever leaving home.
  • Touchless payments. With license plate recognition cameras, daily parkers, HHELPR parkers, and e-validation beneficiaries will be able to simply insert a credit or debit card for payment in the exit lane.

Installations of the new parking system will occur throughout the months of August and September, beginning with Garage G (315 Hudson Street) during the week of August 10. Installation in Garage D (215 Hudson Street) is scheduled to begin the week of August 24, Garage B (28 2nd Street) during the week of September 7, and Midtown Garage (371 4th Street) during the week of September 21. For more specific information pertaining to your customer group, please review the sections below or call the garage office at 201-653-7333.

Monthly Customers

If you are a monthly parker, HPU will need your current license plate. Please click here to provide those details. Once you have provided your information, you will receive an email in the coming days with login instructions for your new account. Beginning in September, monthly payments must be made through the new online portal or by check.

Hourly Customers

With the installation of license plate recognition (ALPR) technology, daily parkers no longer have to worry about lost tickets. Parking rates will be automatically calculated based on vehicle entrance and exit scan times. Customers will still receive tickets upon entrance to the garage and will have the option of using that ticket at our payment kiosks or utilizing touchless payment at the garage exit. Hourly parkers will also benefit from a newly installed RedStorm Parking Guidance System that will let drivers know how many parking spaces are available in real-time.

NEW E-Validation Program (Coming Soon)

Parking validation is a great way for Hoboken business owners to provide loyal customers with free or discounted parking at our Municipal Garages. With the new TIBA E-Validation system, businesses can quickly activate, and track discount parking validations for their customers online. It also allows business owners to make payments at the end of each month, and no longer requires pre-purchase. Additional benefits include:

  • License Plate Recognition. New license plate recognition cameras will scan your customer's license plate upon entry and exit, automatically applying the discounted rate.
  • No More Validations to Purchase in Advance at City Hall. E-Validations can be purchased and activated online, eliminating the need for paper-based merchant validation coupons.
  • Easy Management. Enrolled businesses will receive an online account with TIBA Smartpark. Once setup, businesses can e-validate parking online for their customers and manage payments monthly.
  • Discounted Rates.

Merchants will be able to present any unused legacy validation tickets to our garage manager, Jason Rubino, at 215 Hudson Street to be applied to the first billing cycle of the E-Validation program.
